Water-based wood coatings – Why Biomass Coatings are safe for children ?

Water-based wood coatings have recently become a new trend. Water-based paints are considered a safe solution to replace traditional PU wood coatings. Initially, water-based paints caused concerns because wood is generally sensitive to water. However, after using them, customers realized that they are completely superior and offer many outstanding advantages compared to conventional PU coatings. In particular, they are safe for users and even for food contact. So, what is the composition of water-based wood coatings, and why are they safe? Let’s explore with Biomass.

I/ Composition of water-based wood coatings Biomass

Biomass water-based wood coating is an acrylic-based wood coating. Also known as a “water-based acrylic wood coating,” this type of paint has acrylic resin as its main component. It is mixed with water instead of organic solvents. Biomass water-based wood coating consists of six main components:

  1. Acrylic Copolymer Resin: Acrylic resin is the primary ingredient in water-based coatings, forming the paint film after the water evaporates. It also plays a key role in binding other components of the paint. Acrylic copolymer resin provides durability, adhesion, and excellent resistance to heat and wear on wood surfaces.
  2. Water: Water serves as the main solvent, replacing organic solvents, making the coating safer for both users and the environment. It helps disperse resin and pigment particles in the paint. This is why water-based coatings are less toxic for wood applications.
  3. Pigments: Pigments provide color to the coating. In transparent coatings, pigments may be replaced with light or colorless tints to preserve the natural wood grain.
  4. Additives: These include UV blockers, film formers, drying retarder, and antifungal and antibacterial agents, which enhance the paint’s properties.
  5. Thickener: Added to adjust the viscosity of the paint, making it easier to apply to wooden surfaces.
  6. Preservatives: Protect the paint from bacterial and fungal growth during storage.

II/ Water-based Wood Coatings – Strictly Quality Control From Outputs to Inputs

1. Selection Ingredients With A Clear Quality Control Procedures

Biomass water-based wood coatings undergo strict inspection and selection processes from input to output. The input materials and components are carefully selected from high-quality suppliers with clear origins. Most of the ingredients are rigorously inspected for quality, labeling, condition, certification, and expiration date before being brought into production. Throughout the production process, Quality Control (QC) personnel continuously monitor to ensure that the final product maintains consistent, high-quality standards before being delivered to customers. Even after the product reaches the customer, Biomass technicians continue to check the quality and provide guidance on application.

2. Safe and Eco-Friendly Wood Coatings’ Composition

As mentioned in Part I, Biomass coatings contain safe ingredients, from resins to thinners and solvents. Furthermore, with water-based chemical components, the paint evaporates quickly (dries fast), contains no harmful chemicals, and has a low volatile organic compound (VOC) content. Notably, Biomass paint does not contain carcinogens or substances that affect reproductive health. Additionally, being water-based, Biomass is environmentally friendly and poses less risk of fire or explosion compared to conventional paints.

3. Green Certificate – Approval for  Biomass Coatings’ High Standard and Safety

     a/ Greenguard Gold Certificate

To enter the market, Biomass had to undergo several rigorous tests, one of which is the Greenguard Gold certification. This certification is issued by UL (United States) and sets standards for VOC, lead, and mercury levels in building products such as paints, adhesives, and cleaners. All levels must comply with the regulation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). This aims to classify clean and safe paints for environments such as schools and hospitals. Biomass is proud to have earned this certification.

     b/ EN71-3 Standard

EN71-3 Standard is a European standard for the safety of children’s toys. It specifies the permissible levels of health-hazardous substances such as heavy metals, formaldehyde, and lead. In the EN71-3 test, the sample is immersed in an acid solution that has a concentration similar to stomach acid. This simulates the scenario where a child might accidentally put a toy in their mouth. After soaking for two hours, the sample is removed, and the concentrations of substances that have leached into the gastric fluid are measured. Additionally, the condition of the sample is inspected to determine whether it is safe for young children.Water-based wood coating is safe for kids

     c/ REACH Certificate

This is a regulation of the European Union. REACH applies to most consumer products and sets restrictions on substances that affect health and the environment. Products must comply with the requirement of not containing 235 harmful substances. These substances, known as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC), can cause cancer, disrupt biological functions, and affect reproduction. They are regulated by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). In other words, REACH serves as a key for products to be marketed in the European market while ensuring user health safety. This is also one of the certifications that Biomass has obtained in recent years

d/ The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA)

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) aims to ensure the safety of everyday consumer products, especially those designed for children aged 0-12. For the paint industry, the law requires compliance with three key factors:

  1. Strict limitations on phthalates: Phthalates are chemicals used to soften plastics in children’s toys, and their use is strictly regulated.
  2. Strict limitations on lead in children’s products: According to the standards, the limit is 90 ppm for paint coatings on surfaces and 100 ppm in the base materials.
  3. Certification from a reputable third-party laboratory: This certification must clearly state the levels of lead and other harmful substances present in the paint.

These measures help ensure the safety of children’s products.
